25 years ago, in a small shop in the Willamette Valley, Dave was working on a decoy that he believed would change the way he hunts. What he didn’t realize; was that he was also sculpting the foundation of DSD. While this decoy has changed over the years, to us it doesn’t just represent the start of the company, but also a symbol of everything we strive for to this day and what we value; ultra realism, attention to detail, and deadly effectiveness.
The Original Dave Smith decoy was actually designed to be a Taverner’s Canada Goose. Dave predominantly was targeting smaller goose subspecies and nothing was working on these bigger flocks and he knew there had to be a better way. Despite his best efforts to keep this secret tool to himself and a few close friends, Dave took a block of clay and turned it into a company.
We couldn’t think of a better way to close out our 25th Anniversary Limited Series than with the decoy that started it all…the DSD Rester Tav.
This decoy is an exact replica of Dave’s very first sculpture in ‘99. Made from the same rigid materials with inserted wings and tails for unparalleled realism. With a paint match from when Dave and Brad were chasing Tav’s back in 1999 and on, we wanted to encapsulate that to a tee. This is a collector decoy that pays 25 years in homage to the brand. We are so excited to present the 25th Anniversary Rester Tav.

Conservation
In partnership with Ducks Unlimited, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) is hoping to get a better handle on Lesser Canada and Taverner’s cackling geese ecology to better understand and manage these populations. The information obtained from these collars provides insights into:

Migration Routes
Estimation of Survival/Harvest
Decoys are an important element to drawing geese to the rocket nets. While conducting captures in March 2024, the team first used DSD goose decoys and were immediately impressed with how geese responded to the spread. Along with the financial contribution, DSD also donated Lesser decoys over the summer to help assist with the banding efforts.
20% of the sales for this limited series will be donated to this effort through the Born to Fly initiative.
